Words to live by

Happy Thursday, friends.

Ever since writer Doris Lessing's recent death, I haven't been able to get one of her most famous quotes out of my mind:

"Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible."

For me, these truly are words to live by. We can all come up with excuses not to follow our dreams right now: I'm too old. I'm too young. I'll wait until the kids are out on their own. I don't have time.... But as Lessing said, we're always going to face obstacles when it comes to doing whatever it is we're meant to be doing. There's never going to be a perfect time. The only time is now.

I feel like I'm finally doing what I need to do to make my own dreams come true. How about you? Are you doing what you're meant to do?

Wishing you all a wonderful Thursday. ☺

Sunday inspiration

Happy Sunday, friends.

I love all types of art, but one of my particular interests is art made from unusual objects. Today's inspiration fits that bill nicely: New York City-based artist Nina Boesch creates her art using discarded MetroCards. What a great way to recycle and at the same time create something beautiful!

You can see more of Boesch's MetroCard creations here.

Wishing you all a creative and inspirational Sunday. ☺

It was a long, long night...

but I finished my son's birthday cake!

He's seven today, and as I mentioned yesterday, I can hardly believe how fast the years have gone. He requested a Mario cake again—a year has passed, and he still needs his Mario fix!—so I made this one, which is loosely based on his favorite game right now, Super Mario Galaxy 2.

This afternoon, we're going to celebrate his birthday by taking him and his sister to see The Lego Movie. This will be their first-ever trip to a movie theater. They're so excited!☺

This day is shaping up to be a good one here, and I hope you all have a great day, too—and a happy weekend. ☺

On my mind...

No, it's not Georgia I've been thinking about—remember that song?—but I've definitely had a lot of things on my mind this week. ☺

First, though: Happy Thursday, all!

As I mentioned, this week has been a busy one for me. It's been filled with doctor's appointments (mine and the kids'), coughs (both of the kids), and preparations for a birthday celebration. My son will be seven tomorrow. I can't believe it! The years really do pass by so quickly. He's requested another Mario cake this year, so I'll be up all night baking and decorating: fun—and tiring—but definitely worth it!

Last night, though, I worked on my latest prompt for my art journaling course. I've been taking some inspiration from an artist I featured in my Sunday Inspiration series a couple of weeks ago, Hong Yi. (Post here.) She creates her art using unusual materials like coffee stains. I've been working on a tea-stained background for one of my art journaling pages, and so far I'm pretty happy with the results. I love trying new techniques. I'm learning so much!

One other thing I've been thinking about this week is whether I should attempt to participate in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I signed up, but with everything going on in April (namely our new baby's arrival!), I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up with the posting and commenting. Decisions, decisions!

So how has your week been? Any big plans or celebrations? Are you planning on participating in the A to Z? If so, what are your tips for juggling a busy April and the challenge?

Wishing you all a fantastic Thursday. ☺

Sunday inspiration

Happy Sunday, friends.

Are you ready for some fun? Today's inspiration is writer and artist October Jones. I recently saw some of his work on Reshareworthy.com and immediately fell in love with the whimsy of his art. (See the article here.) Jones, who describes himself in his Twitter blurb as a "drawer of heads," uses Post-It Notes in a very fun and creative way. See for yourself in the video below:

You can learn more about Jones by checking out his Twitter page or Tumblr blog.

Wishing you all a creative and inspirational Sunday. ☺

Friday fun

Happy Friday—and Happy Valentine's Day!

These weeks sure pass by quickly. I wanted to post here a lot more this week than I actually did, but as usual, life had other plans. I'm thirty-two weeks pregnant today, and exhaustion has once again hit me full-force. I see a lot of naps in my future—and that's exactly what I'll be doing this weekend. Well, that and eating the box of Valentine's Day chocolates that my husband hid in the closet. ☺

What are your plans for today and the weekend? Whatever you're doing, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Sunday inspiration

Happy Sunday, friends. ☺

Today's inspiration is Malaysian artist-architect Hong Yi, who is also known as Red. I discovered her blog, Oh I See Red, last week and immediately fell in love with her artwork. According to her blog, Red is mainly known as the artist who "loves to paint, but not with a paintbrush," and it's this use of unconventional materials that fascinates and intrigues me.

I've included two videos of  her work below. The first is a portrait of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, which Red has created by cutting slices from books, and the second is a coffee cup-stain portrait of musician Jay Chou. You can find many more examples of her work on her blog or on her Web site, found here. Enjoy!

Wishing you all a creative and inspirational Sunday. ☺

Friday fun

Happy Friday, friends. ☺

It feels like ages since I've posted! I've tried to log on at least once a day to comment on your blog posts, but I haven't had the energy or the time to write one of my own. I'm hoping that I get back into the swing of things next week. My husband has been recuperating from his surgery for over a week now, so things should start to get easier around here soon—I hope! Until then, I want to hear all about the things you've been up to. What's new in your world? Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?

Now on to the funnies. Those of you visit my blog regularly know I'm a fan of The Ellen Degeneres Show. Today I want to share a few more of her hilarious videos. Enjoy!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend. ☺

Sunday inspiration

Happy Sunday, friends.

Today's inspiration comes from sand artist Andres Amador. He's a San Francisco native who uses a single rake to create intricate "playa" (beach) paintings at low tide. In the short profile below, you'll see some of Amador's work and learn why he has chosen to create such intriguing but temporary pieces of art. To see even more examples of his creations, check out this story at ViralNova or go to his Web site, found here. Enjoy!

Wishing you all a creative and inspirational Sunday. ☺
